Gautrain’s marketing ace, Leago Maruma, is, quite frankly, fabulous. Glam, grounded and great fun, she’s the force behind the brand’s brilliant recent campaign starring DJ Black Coffee. If you haven’t seen the deadly cool images of the global superstar, do yourself a favour. Created to promote the Gautrain as the go-to route for his foundation benefit concert last month, the campaign is just clever marketing. It even made us want to hop into a carriage and glide around the city. Job done, Leago!
What’s the best book you’ve read in the past year, and why?
I read How to Love Better by Yung Pueblo during a period of deep healing after a devastating breakup. I needed guidance on how to love myself again, and how to offer love to others without losing myself in the process. This book spoke directly to that journey – its insights on love, boundaries and emotional clarity helped me understand how to give and receive love in healthier ways. A dear sister-friend recommended it to me, and I’m grateful she did.
How do you keep fit?
I wish I could say the gym, but honestly, I haven’t been keeping up with fitness the way I should. Lately, I’ve been focusing more on watching what I eat and making healthier choices.
Weeknight, low-key restaurant go-to?
The Big Mouth at Nelson Mandela Square or The Codfather Polofields – obsessed with the salmon!
What is the one artwork you’ll always love, and why? You needn’t own it.
Not to sound vain, but there’s a stunning painting of me that an artist created after seeing my weight-loss journey on Instagram. I’ve shed 100kg to date, and this piece has become my absolute favourite artwork. It captures my face in such a regal, beautiful way that it still amazes me every time I look at it.
Do you have a hobby? What is it?
I have a lot of hobbies. I cook very well and I cook for my loved ones all the time. I decorate houses, I read, I look at fashion inspiration, and I post on my WhatsApp status when I have time, speaking my mind …
The one unusual item you can’t live without?
A towel my grandmother bought me when I was still overweight – she passed away three months ago. And my body-shaper corset, because I can’t stand the fact that I have rolls on my tummy.
Who was your high-school celeb crush?
One celebrity I absolutely adored was a radio host and DJ named Douglas Mosadi from Motsweding FM. I was completely besotted with him!
Three songs you’d take to a desert island?
Someday (ft Zano) by Black Coffee; Holy Forever by CeCe Winans; and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill – the whole album!
