The bateleur eagle was selected for its unique body shape and colourful feathers. This eagle has a compact body, short tail, and long, bow-shaped wings. Its plumage includes black feathers, a chestnut mantle, and bright red skin and legs.
The reverse of the three gold coins in the series presents a detailed close-up portrait of the bateleur, while the reverse of the four fine-silver coins depicts the eagle with its wings spread, about to land. Each reverse design includes the inscriptions “The Odyssey” and “Bateleur Eagle,” along with the coin’s denomination and hallmark. The Coat of Arms, year of issue and the words ‘South Africa’ feature on the obverse of the coins.
Both the obverse and reverse designs incorporate a pattern inspired by a traditional South African printed cloth called isishweshwe, to symbolise the interconnectedness between humanity and nature.
