In producing her podcast series, Nothing Works but the People, Joburg multimedia ace and storyteller Pheladi Sethusa spent months with different South Africans at work, hoping to shed some light on what different jobs looks like, and what they mean for the country.

She’s already shadowed architects, teachers and bus drivers, and now she takes another creative turn, tracking the daily tasks of a local hairdresser and barber.

Anyone reading this will know how critical a good hairstylist is in a person’s life. Losing them to retirement or relocation is a real trauma. Who else will you trust with your hair?

As Sethusa says (and we seriously agree): “They say the relationship with one’s hairstylist is one of the most sacred and intimate bonds one can develop. More than just a place for personal grooming, sitting in a salon chair is a place of unburdening and vulnerability for both parties.”
