The DA has just chosen a new leader and leadership team, and the personable Geordin Hill-Lewis, now the federal leader of the DA, has set the party the target of becoming the country’s largest party.

Merchant banker Mark Barnes and journalist Tim Cohen discuss this question, only somewhat cynically, with special guest Ryan Coetzee. Coetzee is a political adviser long associated with the DA who has been a consultant to a wide range of organisations, including being special adviser to then UK deputy prime minister Nick Clegg.

Also, political developments around the world.

  1. 2.59: Herman Mashaba will never work with the DA. The guy lives to hate the DA. I think its his primary motivation in life. I also think ASA will shrink considerably in the next election. They have shown their hands in the VAT debacle and people are much more skeptical of them.

  2. Hi I would really like to access this podcast on apple podcasts. but i can inly find the old one from news24z perhaps you can check

  3. A lot of good thoughts but ignoring the elephant in the room which is racial identity politics. A great many people will simply not vote for the DA, no matter how effective they are, because they are led by a white person. Full stop! Not right, or fair. Just a reality in a country where EVERYTHING is still viewed through a racial lens. Sad to say!

  4. Proven themselves as local authority bureaucrats , even regional but the party lacks depth of negotiating and political nuance. They have been outmanouvered by the ANC in the GNU and several other bodies. Until there emerges some political depth they remain good bureaucrats ,slightly left of centre , and not political adept. There are enormous hurdles to be overcome and an internationally skilled leader is needed to deal with the main investors from the WEST. Not kowtow to the Chinese who will take everything .
