OPPO, the global smart-device brand founded in China in 2004, is one of the world’s top five smartphone-makers and has been steadily growing its footprint in South Africa. At the helm of its local marketing is Avashnee Moodley, whose mix of strategic sharpness and personal passions makes her an ideal subject for our eight questions (and she’s our first Hyrox participant, so snaps for that!).

What is the best book you have read in the past year and why?

I have leaned into audio this year, so if we can stretch “read” to “learnt from”, two podcast series stand out. One is Emma Grede’s Aspire for clear, hard-won lessons on brand and partnership craft, and the other is Grace Beverley’s Working Hard for a refreshingly practical take on boundaries and sustainable ambition.

Both have sharpened how I lead and make trade-offs.

How do you keep fit?

I train Hyrox. I enjoy the high-intensity workouts that combine strength and endurance, and I walk a lot during the day to think and reset. I also see a chiropractor regularly for posture and mobility. Keeping fit for me is more prehab than rehab.

Weeknight low-key restaurant go-to?

Besos in Craighall Park is relaxed, consistent, and a reliable weeknight seafood fix.

What is the one artwork you will always love?

I love travel and so, wherever I go, I look for one handmade piece that reflects the place and holds a memory. Asia has been the richest source, especially Buddhist art and craft, so the collection has a calm, grounded feel. Those pieces now live on my mantelpiece as quiet markers of the journeys behind them.

Do you have a hobby?

Sport is my happy place, football first. I’m a Manchester United supporter and a close follower of Formula 1, so most weekends I’m watching one or the other. As head of marketing at OPPO, I get to merge passion with profession. Thanks to our partnership with the Uefa Champions League, I recently got to go to a match with our team, a full-circle moment – fan, marketer, traveller all in one. It was an opportunity to connect with customers, media and stakeholders.

What is the one unusual item you cannot live without?

Right now, it’s my daily matcha with oat milk. Self-admission: I’ve fallen for the hype, tiny whisk, travel tin, the lot – but the ritual gives me calm focus and a small moment to breathe.

Who was your high school celebrity crush?

There were a few. David Beckham and Freddie Prinze Jr. That 90s charm was everything.

Three songs you would take to a desert island?

Iris by Goo Goo Dolls; With or Without You by U2; and Yellow by Coldplay.
