The Currency gift guide does … coastal holiday

Tropical, relaxing and rather glamorous – here are gifts for the person who thinks the beach is their spiritual home.

They’re the type who are counting down the nano-seconds until they can get into a plane or SUV, leave the grind behind, and go coastal.

Maybe it’s the sea air that bewitches them, or the prospect of afternoon snoozes, but we swear this lot become different (nicer) humans once they get within walking distance of the ocean. They don slops and kaftans, they forget to brush their magazine-perfect hair, they stroll on the beach and collect shells. It’s all frightening chilled out – and deeply appealing.

Now we know many of you head to Plett, St Francis and Kommetjie come December, but in gathering gifts, we channelled KwaZulu-Natal North Coast vibes. Perhaps a little out of fashion, possibly on account of that little issue of sewage in the sea, but we still think nothing beats a balmy break on that coastline.

Cocktails on the balcony at 3pm, monkeys causing trouble, sun so hot you can’t walk on the tarred road, and board games when it rains. What a scene. Here, for those who love those heady moments, are some excellent gifts …
