Kirsten Goss is one of South Africa’s best-known jewellery designers, but she’s just as memorable as the pieces she creates. Whether she’s walking into a room in an impeccably layered, ultra-chic outfit or making everyone laugh with her larger-than-life personality, Goss has a knack for leaving an impression. The Currency team have long been fans of her distinctive jewellery too, and proudly boast treasured Kirsten Goss pieces in our respective collections.
Launched in London in 2002, her eponymous brand blends clean, organic lines inspired by her Scandinavian heritage with the bold use of colour drawn from her African upbringing, alongside an enduring fascination with texture and form.
What’s the best book you’ve read in the past year, and why?
Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell. I spent most of it wondering how someone can write that beautifully without making the rest of us feel completely inadequate. It’s a masterclass in observation, grief and language. I read it with a highlighter in one hand and professional envy in the other.
How do you keep fit?
I made sure our Cape Town store was within walking distance of home and the studio. It feels like my London days, when I would walk to our store. I adore that.
Week-night, low-key restaurant go-to?
A Tavola is an institution in the burbs. In at 6.30pm, home by 9pm. I love the staff, who’ve been there as long as the recipes, the signature pastas and the owners, who make it feel like one big family kitchen.
What is the one artwork you’ll always love, and why?
Guernica by Pablo Picasso, in Madrid. If someone offered me a choice between a house full of masterpieces or one wall with Guernica on it, I’d take the wall.
Do you have a hobby? What is it?
Getting a massage 😉
The one unusual item you can’t live without?
Sparkling water.
Who was your high school celeb crush?
Leo DiCaprio. It was hard to argue with that one!
Three songs you’d take to a desert island?
Anything by The Smiths, Constitución by Las Eras, and Elton John’s I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues.
