Most people involved in the worlds of soccer, media, philanthropy, or simply the Joburg scene, know Connie Motshumi. After more than a decade as head of stakeholder relationships and communications for the Premier Soccer League, the dynamo has embarked on her own journey into entrepreneurship, where she’s putting her skills in reputation, strategy and stakeholder relations into play. But what does she do when not on the hustle? We found out.
What’s the best book you’ve read in the past year? And why?
I’d pick two books. First, The Diary of a CEO by Steven Bartlett. It offered insight and reminders about business strategy, life’s lessons, and the journey of being an entrepreneur. It’s been especially helpful as I embark on my own entrepreneurial path.
The second is Notes on Grief by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, which I read on a friend’s recommendation after the passing of my brother. It really resonated with me. Death is painful (especially an untimely and tragic death). I’ve had to learn how to live with grief and surrender to it when the pain hits … I’m left with beautiful and loving memories of him.
How do you keep fit?
I’ve just started pilates, but walking has been therapeutic and helps me stay fit.
Weeknight, low-key restaurant go-to?
Bellagio in Illovo is so beautiful and serves good food any day of the week.
What is the one artwork you’ll always love, and why?
I love the work of Gerard Sekoto, and especially The Song of the Pick. It’s majestic and deeply meaningful. The colours in the piece are captivating and vibrant.
Do you have a hobby?
I enjoy styling my home, as well as dressing and styling my children. I also love travelling.
The one unusual item you can’t live without?
I’m not sure if it’s unusual, but I have to have chilli on my food!
Who was your high school celeb crush?
George Michael and Michael Jackson.
Three songs that you’d take to a desert island?
Thank You Master, by Donny Hathaway; War of the Gods, by Billy Paul; and Water, by Tyla (water seems key – after all, I’ll be on a desert island!).
