Joburg feeling a little grim? We get it. Between the rugged roads (a euphemism, if ever there was one), “water supply disruption” and the harsh July landscape, it’s often hard to see the good in the City of Gold.

But before you book a one-way ticket to a Greek island, here are a few fresh (and freshly revamped) spots worth your time – perfect for working, coffee runs or just eating well.

here.

Sure, working from home has its perks, but if you’re craving some buzz, good coffee, and a change of scene, head to here. in Rosebank.

Billed as a “third space” – a cultural hangout that’s neither home (first place) nor work (second place) – here. nails that in-between energy. Located in a first-floor spot with views over bustling Rosebank, the space features curated local art and furniture by Joey Khuvutlu’s ultra-cool brand, Daily.

And the coffee? Excellent. You’ll also find matcha, a killer pastry selection, stacked toasties, sandwiches – and even the occasional DJ set.

Pink Mama’s

This very Instagrammable Dunkeld gem is made for lazy Sunday afternoons: imagine yourself with a cocktail or chilled glass of wine in hand, basking in the sun. Even in winter, when they bring out the heaters and you can cuddle up.

Pink Mama’s is situated in a newly revamped family house, now painted a soft dusty pink. The interiors include pretty patterned fabrics and stained-glass windows, and are as charming as they are inviting. Bonus: it’s right next to some padel courts, so you can squeeze in some movement before settling in for a delicious Italian meal.

Vegetarians will love the melanzane (layers of brinjal and cheesy goodness!) while meat lovers should go for the wood-fired pizza topped with Parma ham, figs, buffalo mozzarella, and hot honey. We also enjoyed the oxtail. For dessert? The pistachio tiramisu is non-negotiable.

The Frog

Part lifestyle store, part bar, The Frog in Illovo is where you can shop Jim Green Footwear while enjoying a drink and a hearty meal. Owned by Chad Crouch, Yanky Woolf and Sean Haarhoff, it’s a spot that’s serious about good grub, solid cocktails and beautifully made local leather shoes.

The drinks list is solid; think craft cocktails, good wine and cold beer. But the menu? Let’s just say you’ve never seen one like this. First up: a delightful footwear selection featuring the Ashley (a unisex vellie in pink or fawn) and the rugged Meander Moc Toe. Once you’ve picked your shoes, move on to the cosy pub classics, including the beef and Guinness pie or steak, egg and chips.

The Whippet

Okay, we know it’s not new, but we think The Whippet is well worth a fresh look. The long-time Linden favourite has just undergone an impressive refurbishment and expansion. Recently named one of the Top 100 Coffee Shops in the World, this Jozi brunch staple now boasts sleek new indoor and outdoor spaces, thanks to a collaboration with up-and-coming local architects and designers.

Launching 15 July, their revamped menu includes a broader wine list, curated pairings with wine and craft beer, and an even stronger brunch game. They’ve also teamed up with sister store SMOKE in Pretoria to introduce a bold new cocktail menu crafted with help from expert mixologists.
