Deuce Experience brings the magic of Wimbledon to Joburg

The second Deuce Experience pairs live Wimbledon final screenings with elegant hospitality, a fab crowd and strawberries and cream, all without leaving Joburg.

Thwack! The unmistakable sound of a tennis ball meeting strings fills the room. “Advantage, Jannik Sinner,” announces the umpire. Around me, a sea of linen shirts, tailored blazers and glamorous dresses erupts into applause before falling silent once more. For a few hours, Joburg has become Centre Court.

That’s the idea behind the Deuce Experience, a gathering that transforms watching a Grand Slam final into an occasion. Live SuperSport coverage on super-sized screens, thoughtful hospitality and a like-minded crowd make for the kind of afternoon that’s as much about the ritual as the result.

The next edition, The English Greens Championship Weekend, takes place next weekend at Hyde Park Corner to coincide with the Wimbledon finals. Guests can enjoy live screenings of both the women’s and men’s finals alongside elegant nibbles, a traditional English afternoon tea, and a bar for that all-important Pimms Cup. Those looking to linger can retreat to the Heritage Lounge for a cigar between sets.

More than a match

The Currency crew attended the previous Deuce Experience for the French Open women’s final, held at Luxx Venue, overlooking the Sandton skyline. Sure, we weren’t sitting courtside at Roland Garros with flaky croissants and café crème, but all agreed, as the sun set over the city, that it was a rather appealing Plan B.

Guests were welcomed with a chilled coupe of Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque before generous platters of cheese, charcuterie and canapés appeared, and predictions for the afternoon’s match began. One of the joys of a tennis gathering is that conversation comes so easily – everyone already has something in common. And, as it turns out, Joburgers really love the game. There was a lot of tennis talk!

Now, there’s nothing wrong with watching tennis at home, tucked beneath a duvet, but it’s hard not to be swept up by the energy of a room full of people collectively gasping at impossible shots, applauding outrageous winners, and debating every rally. Add a glass of bubbly or two and what could be more delightful?

The ritual of the court

Part of the appeal is that tennis lends itself to occasions like this. Unlike rugby or football, where the action rarely stops, tennis has a rhythm all of its own. Conversation ebbs and flows between games before the room instinctively falls silent for every serve. Then there’s the fashion. While Joburg’s winter ruled out Grand Slam-worthy linen, guests still embraced the spirit of the game in crisp tailoring, elegant dresses and more than a few covetable Loewe jewels. For an afternoon, Centre Court doesn’t feel quite so far away, and we’d love to see this becoming a regular calendar event.
