This June, thousands of football fans will travel across North America chasing unforgettable moments. Unfortunately, they’ll also be chasing some of the world’s most expensive beers.
For many South Africans and Nigerians, the exchange rate can turn a simple round with friends into a painful math exercise. A beer that feels affordable at home suddenly costs double. Sometimes triple.
That’s why Heineken is bringing back Bar de Change.
Following its successful launch earlier this year, Bar de Change returns from June 4-8, giving travellers departing from OR Tambo International Airport, Cape Town International Airport and Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos the opportunity to pre-purchase Heinekens at local prices before departure and redeem them at participating bars across the US and Mexico.
Originally launched over the Easter travel period, the initiative was created to help travellers enjoy Heineken abroad without feeling the full impact of unfavourable exchange rates. Following strong demand from consumers, Heineken is now expanding the platform across additional airports and destinations ahead of a major international football season expected to draw fans from around the world.
The idea is simple: exchange rates shouldn’t decide how social your trip becomes.
Travellers often spend months saving for flights, accommodation and transport, only to arrive and discover that everyday experiences suddenly cost far more than expected. A quick drink with friends, a post-match celebration or a spontaneous night out can become surprisingly expensive once the currency conversion kicks in.
Bar de Change removes that friction by allowing travellers to lock in local beer prices before departure, spending less time doing calculations and more time enjoying the moments they travelled for.
One less calculation. One more conversation.
“This is set to be one of the biggest international travel periods football fans have seen in years, but it’s also likely to be one of the most expensive,” says Heineken brand director South Africa Alex Drake.
“For South Africans and Nigerians, the reality is that exchange rates can influence everything from the bars you chose to visit and whether you stay for one more round with friends.
“Bar de Change was created to remove that barrier and enable more elevated social moments. Because nobody should have to convert currencies before deciding whether to have one more beer.”
He adds: “While we can’t influence the exchange rate, we can create more memorable social moments.”
Following the overwhelmingly positive response to the first Bar de Change activation at OR Tambo International Airport, Heineken has expanded the initiative to Cape Town and Lagos, giving even more African travellers access to the platform.

At its heart, Bar de Change isn’t really about beer. It’s about protecting social moments that make international travel memorable.
The unexpected conversation after a match. The friends you only see once a year. The extra round that turns into an unforgettable night.
Travellers making use of Bar de Change this season are encouraged to share their journeys and social moments from abroad by tagging Heineken on social media. Whether it’s your first beer after landing or a celebration with friends during the football action, Heineken wants to see how Bar de Change helped keep the good times flowing.
