Brandon Fairweather has spent more than two decades working in the health and wellness industry, but some of his biggest lessons have come from outside the office. After undergoing open-heart surgery at 28, surviving a stroke, a near-fatal bleed and cancer, the Biogen South Africa brand manager channelled his experiences into The Hell Inside Our Heads, an honest account of living with severe anxiety, resilience and finding purpose through adversity. We asked Fairweather our eight questions.
What’s the best book you’ve read in the past year, and why?
The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel. (Not The Hell Inside Our Head by me … just kidding.) This book offers an incredible perspective and framework for how to view, use and manage money. It changed my perspective and further shaped my appreciation for simplicity and minimalism.
How do you keep fit?
I go to the gym, but running is my favourite. I’m a little obsessed with parkrun in particular, though I’ve also come to appreciate the benefits of weights and general strength and conditioning.
Weeknight, low-key restaurant go-to?
Luigi’s Pizzeria in Olivedale.
What is the one artwork you’ll always love, and why? (You don’t have to own it!)
I don’t know too much about art, but my wife and I have a very colourful piece by Leonid Afremov in our dining room. Besides the way it energises the room, I love his unique style.
Do you have a hobby? What is it?
I’m a massive football fan. Liverpool is my team. That, and Lego and puzzles.
The one unusual item you can’t live without?
My AirPods.
Who was your high school celeb crush?
Jennifer Aniston.
Three songs you’d take to a desert island?
Gosh, I love music, so narrowing it down to three is tough. At the moment, I’d choose Salt Water by Shaun Jacobs, Vampire Diaries by MGK and Fix You by Coldplay.
