Pinot noir has a reputation for being difficult. Winemakers call it the “heartbreak grape” because it’s notoriously tricky to grow – but when everything comes together, the results can be magical. Family-owned Restless River in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley has clearly cracked the code with this beautifully poised pinot noir.
Our pick this week:
Restless River Le Luc Pinot Noir
R699, Woolworths
Why we love it:
Pinot noir can divide opinion. Its fans are evangelical, while others wonder what all the fuss is about. This bottle from Restless River might just convert a few sceptics. Expect bright red fruit, subtle earthiness and those silky, lacy tannins that pinot devotees are forever raving about. Serve it alongside crispy-skinned roast duck, perfectly pan-seared salmon or a creamy wild mushroom risotto, and you’ll see exactly why they’re so obsessed.
